The Pianote
2024 - Maajaam Artistic Residency, EE
Inspired by the spatio-temporalities found in the natural surroundings of the residency and the ways in which they present, or ‘notate’, themselves into the visible, the ‘pianote’ questions the consecutivisation of space typical of many traditional score-reading practices by distributing the multiple temporalities represented by each marking across a unified space that cannot be ‘read’ or temporally organised from left to right. As such, this prototypical notating instrument invites our engagement with the score as a site of temporal activity and reactivity.
